The London-Southend Classic Car Run
Sunday 29th July 2007

The highway code doesn’t say anything about picnics in the middle of the road.  There is a safer way to eat in the middle of the road though – take part in the London to Southend Classic Car Run.

The weather for the run this year couldn’t have been more suited.  There were in total 204 cars and it’s nice that we had such a good turn out.

The first stop was at Fairlop Waters, where we were given our directions and rally plaque to attach to the front of our car.  There were cameras everywhere as people took their first pictures of the cars and what a variety there were.  The journey took us through many small country lanes and roundabouts which was far more interesting than just a boring drive down a motorway.

We arrived at the half way point which was Basildon, in a convoy of classic cars.  There I saw many people dressed up in outfits in the time era of their car.  There were some people I didn’t recognise because of their wigs of long hair!  After having a drink we began our second stage of the journey.

When we arrived at Southend, I felt like a film star with all the attention the cars were getting from people who were taking photos!  We parked up and as soon as we had got out of the car, people swarmed around taking yet more photos. As my  Mum and Dad looked at all the cars, I was a member of the committee, helping sell the raffle tickets.

As usual, a jazz band played live music all day, with couples displaying different styles of dancing from different eras according to the music. The jazz band had a female singer for some songs, and what a powerful voice she had! On the band’s final song, a duet, got a standing ovation from those in the crowd who were seated! It was really great fun to watch and although I do dancing myself, I really wish I was that good!

It was really fun, having traffic slowly cruise past one way and having the public browsing the other, because one complete half of the road was shut off just so the classic cars could be displayed! The London To Southend Classic Car Run is so much fun for everyone, with chances to win prizes for outfits, cars, best personality and anyone who buys raffle tickets gives themselves a chance to pick between 5 fabulous prizes! This is a really great day out that I look forward to each year and I recommend it to all.

The above event would not have been possible without the support from the following
  • Keymed
  • Eastgate shopping centre
  • Southend borough council
  • Basildon borough council
  • Olympia finance

And of course our thanks go out to all the car owners and drivers, members and non members that gave there time and energy,  without there dedication and enthusiasm these events would never happen.

Hi Committee members,

I am not a member of your club, however I would like to let you know how much I and other old car nuts enjoyed our day out with you at Southend on the 29th July.

Thanks for a great day
 Regards

 Hi guys
I had every intention of contacting you to say how much Anita and I enjoyed taking part in the road-run today - but having won Best in Show I really had to contact you straight away and say thanks.  We had an excellent run: only missed three junctions and had to turn around each time which is no easy feat with 19 foot of left hand drive, 57 year old Chrysler Imperial, no power steering, ball/peg steering box and humping great radials on each corner !  The weather at Southend was excellent, we had a ride up the Pier on the train and back again for Cockles and Prawns, followed by a good look around the cars. Winning the prize was the icing on the cake. Finally got home (Watford) at 7:30pm and washed the sea salt off "The Colonel" before wrapping it up for the night.

Unfortunately your official photographer stepped straight in front of our friend just as she clicked the shutter when I was receiving the magnificent prize - which now has pride of place in our living room. So all we have is a photo of the back of his head.  Any chance you could email me a copy of your photo for our collection ?

Again - many thanks for a fantastic day out. We hope to see you again next year
Best regards

Ray

Hi Paul. This was the first run we had been on and what a thrilling day.
We got home, quite knackered and had to report a most enjoyable and well organised day, far than Anne and I expected. Wow to top it all, Anne went off for the prize draw whilst I was drawn into more conversation on my 100E. She came back eventually and I knew a surprise was coming.
My god! We only won £500 in travel vouchers. How fantastic, to finish off a wonderful day.
Thank you so much for all your efforts for a grand day out. Well done to all.
Lets hope we can make it next year.
Peter Hennessey.
